Objectives
State of the Art : The steel remains passive in the high alkalinity of the concrete irrespective of the type of cement used. However not all cements give the same degree of passivity to the steel as the pH of the pore concrete solution varies with the alkali content and the amount of clinker per cubic meter of concrete.
Objective and Innovation : The project will address the influence of SCMs on the degree of passivity of the steel defined by the passivation current (polarization curves) and the sulfate and chloride concentration. Input on the effect of SCMs on the porous microstructure and the pH value of pore solution will be come from projects 3, 6 and 8. Another aspect to be studied is the effect of inhibitors in the case of presence of additions. It is known that some of the alumino-silicates may bind anions and cations of the inhibitors which might reduce their efficiency. Collaboration with Sika will provide the means to investigate the action of corrosion inhibitors in blended cements.
