Objectives
State of the Art : Study of limited ranges of samples often give strong correlations of strength to the overall porosity calculated purely from cement composition and water content. (e.g. work presented by Herfort10). However, data by Scrivener shows that the microstructure also affects other mechanical properties . The dependence of mechanical properties not only on overall porosity, but on the distribution of this and the other solid phases, requires a new approach to numerical modelling.
Objective and Innovation : This project builds on the work on modelling microstructural development and mechanical properties, being carried out at EPFL . At the macroscopic level the elastic properties will be determined by measuring the propagation of ultrasonic waves in addition to compressive and flexural strength determinations. Determinations of nano and micro porosity in projects 3 and 4 will be used to test the model’s predictions regarding the relationships between composition, porosity and mechanical performance (Aalborg).
